How to Add Bookmarks to a PDF
Bookmarks show up as a collapsible navigation tree in most PDF viewers' sidebar, letting readers jump straight to a chapter instead of scrolling the whole document to find it.
Worth adding, or not
Anything over roughly 15-20 pages with distinct sections — a report, manual, long proposal — benefits. A five-page document doesn't; scrolling through that isn't a real burden the way it is with an eighty-pager.
Creating one
Navigate to the exact page and position, create a bookmark, give it a clear label — ideally matching the actual heading text so readers aren't confused by mismatched names.
Nesting them
For documents with subsections, nest bookmarks under their parent chapter instead of one long flat list. Most tools support drag-and-drop nesting in the bookmark panel.
Bookmarks aren't a substitute for a TOC
They only help digital readers — they don't appear when printed. If the document might get printed too, pair bookmarks with an actual table of contents page so navigation works both ways.
