How to Fill Out a PDF Form Online

June 14, 2026·4 min read·PDFMaster Team

PDF forms come in two flavors, and knowing which one you're looking at changes how you should fill it out.

Fillable vs. flat

A fillable (interactive) form has real form fields — text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns you click straight into. A flat form is just a page with lines and boxes drawn on it, no interactive fields at all.

Filling a fillable form

Open it in a viewer that supports form fields, click each one, type your answer. Most viewers show a highlighted border or cursor over a real field — a quick way to confirm it's actually fillable before you start.

Filling a flat form

You'll need an editor's text tool to manually place text boxes in the right spots — basically typing 'over' the printed lines. Takes more care to align, but looks a lot cleaner than printing and filling by hand.

Checkboxes and signatures on flat forms

For checkbox-style fields, most editors let you drop in a checkmark or X exactly where it's needed. For a signature line, use a signature tool to place your signature image rather than trying to hand-draw it with a text tool.

Save a copy before submitting

Especially for anything official — some submission methods, like uploading to a portal, won't give you a copy back afterward.
