How to Fill Out a PDF Form Online

PDF forms come in two very different types, and knowing which kind you're dealing with changes how you should fill it out.

Fillable forms vs. flat forms

A fillable, or interactive, PDF form has actual form fields built in: text boxes, checkboxes, and dropdowns that you can click into directly. A flat form is just a regular page with lines and boxes drawn on it, with no interactive fields at all, meaning you can't click into it the way you can with a fillable form.

Filling a fillable form

Open the form in a PDF viewer that supports form fields, click into each field, and type your answers directly. Most PDF viewers will show a highlighted border or cursor when you hover over an actual form field, which is a quick way to confirm the form is genuinely fillable before you start.

Filling a flat, non-fillable form

For a flat form, you'll need a PDF editor's text tool to manually place text boxes onto the page in the right spots, essentially typing 'over' the printed lines. This takes a bit more care to align the text correctly, but it produces a much cleaner result than printing the form and filling it by hand.

Checkboxes and signatures on flat forms

For checkbox-style options on a flat form, most editors let you insert a simple checkmark or X symbol you can place precisely where needed. For a signature line, use a signature tool to draw or place your signature image directly onto the line rather than trying to draw it accurately with a text tool.

Saving your filled form

Always save a copy of the completed form for your own records before submitting it, especially for anything official, since some submission methods, like uploading to a portal, won't give you a copy back afterward.
