How to Resize PDF Pages

Resizing changes actual page dimensions — different from zooming or cropping margins. Most often needed when a document made for one paper standard needs to work on another, like US Letter to A4.

The core problem

Letter (8.5 x 11 in) and A4 (8.27 x 11.69 in) have different proportions, not just different sizes. A direct resize without adjustment can cut off content at the bottom or leave odd empty margins — which is why a 'resized' document still sometimes looks slightly off.

Scaling vs. reformatting

A straightforward resize scales everything uniformly, which works for most documents but can make text a bit larger or smaller than expected. True reformatting — adjusting margins and layout specifically for the new size — looks cleaner but isn't something a basic resize tool does automatically.

Check margins after

Make sure nothing important ended up too close to the new edges — printers typically can't print all the way to the physical edge and will clip anything positioned too close.

For repeated use

If you regularly send documents internationally, set the source file (Word, Google Docs) to A4 from the start rather than resizing a finished PDF every time.
